FJ on the mend

dscf9901dscf9902dscf9900We had sent this FJ out to get some mechanical issues addressed while our work load here at the shop was up. We did get it back last week and today we were able to devote some time to it getting this project started back up. What Cole is working on here is repairing where the lower rocker panels were welded in. We removed the rear doors and used a grinder to smooth up the welds. We then applied a coat of metal filler to smooth up the welds. Once that product was dry, it was sanded smooth. He then went over those areas as well as a couple of other places in the jambs to make sure they  all look smooth. Once these areas a taken care of we will do the same to the seams where the front doors are before priming the new rockers.

Hit the Ridge

dscf9830dscf9831dscf9849dscf9854This Honda Ridgeline hit a deer a couple of weeks ago. It really must have been a good sized one too. It really did quite a bit of damage. We replaced the fender, bumper headlight and grill. It did quite a bit of damage under the hood as well. A new air box, new apron, and a few brackets were all called for as well. As you can see the finished job turned out pretty nice.

Not again

You remember this Mustang don’t you?  We painted it a couple of years ago for the owner and over time it has been attacked 3 times by deer. So, thats what we have here. It had been hit twice on the right side and now they are after the left. We were able to repair this fender and quarter with the exception of the side scoop, thats on order. We removed the wheel and fender liner to allow access to the damage. We then used a hammer and dolly to flatten out the damage and prepped it for filler. Once the body work was in ship shape it was primed. This morning, this one was first on the list. We blocked out the primer and prepped the panels for paint. Once that was all done, Paul did his magic in the booth. As you can see, its like it never happened. We are still waiting on the scoop so as soon as that comes in, this Mustang will be ready for the road again.

Oh Deer,

dscf9717dscf9719This Spyder just came in today for us to get started on the repair process on his MR2. Instead of hitting a deer, a deer hit him and as you can see, it did quite a bit of damage. We have all parts on order and we look forward to get this little rare gem back on the road.

Body moving, body moving

dscf9646dscf9648dscf9660dscf9647dscf9661dscf9649dscf9650dscf9651Not sure why I had the Beastie Boys on my mind when writing this post, but it does fit. We have been doing lots of body work on the Ghia. We came in and worked last weekend on it and several hours this week as well. We did cut out a previously repaired patch that I just wasnt happy with. We replaced it with a single larger one and the job is much nicer for it. We also have the lower right rear sheet metal in place. The silver filler material is a product called All Metal. Its great to use over welded patches because of its water proofing abilities. We use this over welds for starters then finish up with filler to do the fine tuning. The body work is coming along and the only welding left on the car now is a few places on the lower front. We hope to get moving on those tomorrow.

Ghia time

dscf9646dscf9647Here we have an update on the Ghia. Although its not progressing as much as I’d like it is moving. I have brought in a guy to help out with some welding since our collision business has been so heavy this past bit. We do have quite a bit of welding wrapped up and we have also been doing some body work. Here you can see the work on the quarters. The area on the left is where that huge patch of rust was cut out. We are now welding up the front end and a small patch is still left in the left quarter. We plan on spending a few hours on it this weekend to play a little catch up.

Back in the saddle

We had some lose ends first thing this morning to tie up on another job that was picking up today, but after that, we were all in on the Ghia. We started by applying the Metal ready product to our welds to ensure great adhesion and a water tight seal. Its personal preference really, but we dont like putting body filler over areas that have been welded. We use Metal Ready for the initial fill, then body filler if needed to smooth the rest up. Thats what you will be seeing here. We did find an area on each door that needed a small patch. One picture show the bad cut out. Not sure why the car rusted here but they were both the same way. As you can see we did get one side cut out and even welded in but my camera died before I could get that picture, so you will see that on Monday. We also applied some body filler to finish straightening out the high and low spots on both doors and was able to get that blocked out and looking nice.  We did make great progress on these today and it should continue next week.

When golf carts attack

DSCF9544DSCF9545DSCF9553DSCF9556DSCF9557DSCF9558Yes. The damage you see here is from a golf cart. An unoccupied golf cart. The story goes that someone loading a golf cart up with some farm supplies when one of the bags landed on the gas pedal. Across the yard sat this Karmann Ghia minding its own business when WHAMO! The fully loaded, unoccupied cart slams into it. Now, I guess the good thing here is that no one was injured but the Ghia and the cart both suffered moderate damage. We started by removing the interior trim panels to access the inner quarter panel. We used hammers and pry bars to push the dents back out as far as possible. We then used the stud welder to pull the rest of the more stubborn dents out. Once the metal was in good shape, we used body filler to smooth out the final dents. While that was being done the rear end was disassembled for a quality job. The bumper, tail lights and reflectors were removed. Once the dents were straight a few coats of primer was sprayed. Tomorrow we should be able to get this one sanded early and in the paint booth.

Parking lot derby

DSCF9479DSCF9480DSCF9478DSCF9485This new style Camry is in for a new door skin from a parking lot bump up. The damage on the door was a little too bad to repair so a skin has been installed to ensure a quality repair. Its not too often you get to see what the inside of your door looks like so above is a great shot of the typical door on a newer car. The two round bars are called intrusion beams. The are high strength steal and are the main structure of the door. The outer panel is what was replaced. Tomorrow we will trim out the back side of this door and get it reinstalled on the car and prep the other door and quarter for blending to ensure a good color match.

DSCF9345DSCF9348DSCF9347DSCF9346Today we were able to get some painting done on the Camaro. We started with painting the bottom side of the hood and trunk. We then painted the inside of doors. Once all that was dry, we flipped them over and painted the top side. While these were getting painted, the car was getting its final sanding so that tomorrow it can be made shiny. On a separate note, I will try to get that camera lens cleaned tomorrow.
